4 Best Mobility Scooters For Short People

If you are short, you might want to find a mobility scooter that will accommodate your size? Hence our list of the best mobility scooters for short people.

Here are a couple of things to consider when deciding for a mobility scooter for short people: the size, the user, and the usage.

Most mobility scooters are designed for people with an average build, which means that if you are 5’ 4” or shorter, you want to pay attention to certain features of the scooter before you purchase.

The Size

Mobility scooters come in different dimensions. Most are categorized as portable-travel, small (can be dismantled), medium (cannot be dismantled) and large or off-road (with some models that can be dismantled).

Smaller sized mobility scooters, those ideal for short people, generally have the following dimensions:

- a backrest that is about 18 inches wide

- a width of about 19 inches

- a length of about 39 inches

- and a turning diameter of about 76 inches for a three-wheel scooter, and 86 inches for a four-wheel scooter.

The User

First, the scooter must be comfortable as well as offer the right physical support. Too much seat width or depth can encourage poor posture and make it difficult for the user to sit upright.

It is important that good posture is maintained for safety as well as for the long-term maintenance and health of the user.

Usage

When buying a scooter, a main purpose for doing so might be to encourage engagement of some sort, whether in the form of outdoor activity or social interaction.

Therefore, before purchasing, it might be helpful for the user to determine what they will be using it for the most. This is the consideration of where the task will be completed and the impact of the scooter size on the ability to complete the task efficiently and safely.

If it is mostly for shopping, then they must ensure that it is narrow enough to maneuver between narrow aisles or rails.

If the intent is to use the mobility scooter around the house, then the dimensions of the scooter should be right for the user’s body size but also narrow enough to fit through doorways and it should be short enough to allow access to cupboards and sinks and have a turning diameter small enough for maneuverability.

If the intent is to use it as a tool for social activities, then consider whether it needs to access a store or building, and if so what the access should be like.
