Why Are Many Mobility Products On Back Order Right Now

About two years ago, you could easily order a mobility product online on a Monday and have it delivered in time to run errands on Saturday.

However, things have changed. Almost all inventory has been depleted, and most mobility products are on backorder.

This is a Covid-19 problem that nobody, not even the economists, could have predicted. This issue has affected the entire economy, including all mobility equipment retailers.

Factors Forcing Mobility Products Into Backorders

Lack of Raw Materials

Most of the raw materials needed to produce mobility products come from Asian countries such as China and Taiwan and some of those countries are still experiencing some sort of lockdown and some ports are operating with limited capacity. Therefore, the availability of raw materials has decreased.

The raw materials that manage to be imported are at the ports waiting to be cleared. Most containers are large with a capacity of 10,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) and take a long time to be offloaded. As such, many ports are faced with more congestion than ever because of shortages of port workers, truck drivers, and containers.

Cost of Raw Materials Have Increased

Due to the strain caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, prices of raw materials are skyrocketing. Getting the materials is a struggle and transporting them is challenging, hence the high prices.

Not Enough Workers

Supply chains disrupted during the global pandemic are still facing enormous challenges and are struggling to bounce back because many workers have left the industries, while others are taking precautionary measures against Covid and staying home. This lack of human resources in the production, shipping, port, and transportation industries is creating real shortages.

High Demand for Mobility Products

As lockdowns are being lifted, the demand for mobility products is increasing as more people feel comfortable getting back to their normal routines.

Additionally, some people who did not have mobility product needs in the past now do and are purchasing like crazy.

Increased Prices of Mobility Products

All of these factors: lack of raw materials, logistical challenges and increased costs to get products to the US, and labor shortages in manufacturing and shipping are contributing to price increases. These factors also make it hard to restock, which contributes to the backorder cycle.
