1 comment Dec 29, 2019by Kellon Ambrose

Are you and your partner in need of a mobility scooter that can accommodate two people? Has the search for a practical, reliable and comfortable 2 person mobility scooter been fruitless?

Well look no further! At Electric Wheelchairs USA, we have an expansive selection of 2 person mobility scooters that offer both style and comfort.

From cost-effective options to luxury models with enough bells and whistles to put theme park rides to shame, there's something here for everyone.

With the recent surge of technological development, like two person electric mobility scooters, having a disability is no longer something you should dwell upon. Numerous companies are competing to create the most convenient mobility aids such as scooters, miniature cars, electric wheelchairs, and other mobility aids.

It’s thanks to these machines that people with walking impairments can avoid leading sedentary lifestyles, enjoy going to places they love, and never fret about being trapped in their houses with no outdoor experience.

Mobility scooters are usually a single seater and they’re designed to accommodate only one person.  In this article, I’ll be presenting a different idea and type of mobility scooter to you; a 2-person mobility scooter that comfortably fits two.  I’ll also be listing my top 5 picks for 2-person or dual seating mobility scooters!

Sound interesting? Lets get into more about dual seating mobility scooters!

So, Why Buy a Mobility Scooter for 2 People?

Elderly Couple Looking For Mobility Scooter in Wilderness

Alright, so you might think that the only benefit of a double-seated mobility scooter is that it takes 2 people, but no, that’s not the entire story.

They’re Much More Heavy-Duty

Other than accommodating 2 people on board, a 2-person mobility scooter is exponentially more heavy-duty than a standard mobility scooter.

This means that everything involved in the scooter’s structure is bigger, stronger, sturdier, and more durable.  A few primary benefits of a 2 person scooter would include:

  • Powerful wheel suspensions
  • Larger more sturdy tires
  • A high-powered wattage motor
  • Stronger scooter seat and frame

Many 2-person electric scooters can even sustain light off-road adventures and long hours of usage.

They Can Provide a Comfortable Ride for People with Extra Weight

These scooters can take up the combined weight of 2 adults, or even one large adult.

Scooter users should never fret about the weight capacity of a 2-person electric scooter. These scooters are so powerful they can handle the weight of a person of up to 500 lbs and in some cases even 600 lbs.  Whatever weight capacity you need, we are sure to have something to fit your needs.

They’re extremely stable and well-built, so there's no need to worry about them flipping over or poorly performing due to the extra added weight.

Mobility Scooter Users Will Never Feel Lonely Again

If your parent, friend, sibling, or significant other rides a single-user mobility scooter, I’m sure you have noticed how lonely they can be riding by themselves.

A 2-person mobility scooter provides room for you to sit side by side or right behind your partner, providing the needed company and comfort.

It’s a great way to show you’re being considerate and thoughtful about your disabled partner, and that you simply want to be a good companion to them.

Why Purchasing From An Authorized Dealer is The Only Way To Go

Soon, we’ll be checking out what I feel are the top 5 electric mobility scooters for 2 people.  Before we get into that, I think it is important to point out why its important that you purchase from an authorized dealer like us.

All of the scooters on our site ship directly from the the brand or manufacturer to you and all of our products are covered under the manufacturer's warranty.

Best of all, these companies are all US based companies, so you know you will get your product in a timely manner and won't have to just through hoops to get questions answered.

At Electric Wheelchairs USA, we strive to provide superior customer service.  Our phone line is open everyday from 8AM-8PM and our agents are always ready to help. Our mission is to help people with walking disabilities regain their independence achieve their freedom once again.

We also have the best prices you can find anywhere online.  This backed by our Low Price Guarantee.   Aside from that, we offer free shipping plus we do not charge sales tax in most states.

Now that we have that out of the way, let’s get into my top picks for 2 seating mobility scooters!

Electric Wheelchairs vs Mobility Scooters

Will a 2-Person Mobility Scooter Fit Through Your Doorway? The Complete Width Guide

This is the question every dual-seat scooter buyer asks after falling in love with a model — and currently no mobility scooter blog answers it completely. Here's everything you need to know before purchasing.

Important distinction: seat width ≠ total scooter width The spec tables on this page list "seat width" — but the scooter's total frame width is wider than the seat alone. Handlebars, armrests, and frame components extend beyond the seat dimensions. When evaluating doorway clearance, you need the total frame width, not the seat width listed in specs.

Total widths for the featured models (where available):

  • Afiscooter S3 Dual: 37" total frame width — the narrowest dual-seat model on this list (the product listing explicitly states the 37" frame width in the cons section)

  • Afiscooter SE: The 45" turning radius and side-by-side 40" seat suggest a total width significantly wider than 40" — call 800-682-9444 to confirm before purchasing

  • Afiscooter S4: Single-seat configuration is narrower than dual; standard single-seat frame width is approximately 24"–26"; the 33" dual seat configuration widens the frame proportionally

  • Green Transporter Q Runner: Enclosed cabin — not designed for doorway navigation; this is an outdoor/street vehicle

  • Cheeta Ninja Dual: 49" dual seat suggests a total width of approximately 55"–65"; designed for outdoor terrain, not doorway navigation

Standard US doorway widths:

  • Standard interior residential doorways: 28"–32" clear opening

  • Standard exterior/bedroom doors: 32"–36" clear opening

  • ADA-compliant doorways (required in accessible buildings): 32"–36" minimum clear opening

  • Wide ADA doorways in newer accessible construction: 36" or wider

The honest picture for these 5 models: None of the 5 featured 2-person scooters will comfortably pass through a standard 32" residential doorway in dual-seat configuration. The Afiscooter S3 Dual at 37" total width requires a minimum 37" clear doorway — wider than most interior doors, and borderline for standard exterior/ADA doors. The Afiscooter SE, Q Runner, and Cheeta Ninja Dual are all wider.

What this means practically: 2-person mobility scooters are designed as outdoor community vehicles — for parks, campgrounds, golf courses, shopping centers, and outdoor use. They are not designed for indoor navigation through standard residential doorways. If you need a dual-seated experience indoors, the Afiscooter S4 in single-seat mode (standard residential width) with the dual-seat upgrade available for outdoor use is the most flexible option.

For buyers like Robert Rupp (or anyone with a 33" apartment doorway):

  • The Afiscooter S3 Dual at 37" would not fit a 33" doorway — but the standard single-seat Afiscooter S4 would

  • The Afiscooter S4's dual-seat upgrade can be added for outdoor riding while keeping the standard single seat configuration for indoor use

  • Call 800-682-9444 to discuss custom seating options or the specific clearance of any model relative to your doorway measurement

Before you purchase: measure these key dimensions

  1. Doorway clear width: Measure the clear opening of your narrowest doorway at the widest point — note that the clear opening is typically 1"–2" narrower than the door itself

  2. Hallway width: Measure the width at the tightest point of any hallway the scooter will navigate

  3. Elevator dimensions: If using an elevator, measure both the door opening and the interior platform

  4. Outdoor path clearance: If using on specific park or trail paths, note any gated entries or width-restricted passages

2-Person Scooter Seating Configurations: Which Type Is Right for You?

Not all 2-person scooters seat riders in the same way — and the configuration you choose should match your specific situation. Here's how each type works and who it's best for.

Side-by-Side Seating (most models on this list): Both riders sit next to each other, facing forward in the same direction. The seat extends laterally, and both riders share the footboard space.

Best for:

  • Couples where both have mobility challenges (both can reach controls from their respective sides)

  • Friends or family who want to ride together on equal footing

  • Buyers for whom social connection during the ride matters — you're literally beside each other, not one behind the other

Trade-off: The widest footprint of any configuration. Side-by-side seating is why these scooters are too wide for most indoor doorways.

Featured models with side-by-side: Afiscooter S3 Dual (33" seat), Afiscooter SE (40" seat), Green Transporter Q Runner (34" seat), Cheeta Ninja Dual (49" seat)

Tandem/Front-Rear Seating: One rider sits in front, one behind. Narrower overall footprint than side-by-side; the scooter's width is determined by the single seat width rather than combined seat width.

Best for:

  • Caregiver-and-user configurations where the caregiver sits behind and may assist

  • Environments with narrower paths where width is a constraint

None of the current featured models use tandem seating — all are side-by-side. If tandem is a priority, call 800-682-9444 to discuss options in our broader catalog.

Convertible Single-to-Dual (Afiscooter S4): The Afiscooter S4 is uniquely designed to work as either a standard single-seat scooter or a dual-seat scooter. The standard 18" seat serves as a full-function single-rider scooter; the dual-seat upgrade expands it to 33" for two riders. You can configure it based on your needs for each outing.

Best for:

  • Buyers who need indoor single-seat functionality AND outdoor dual-seat capability

  • Bariatric single users who want the full 33" seat width for comfort without a second rider

  • Households where the scooter is sometimes used solo and sometimes shared

This convertible approach is the Afiscooter S4's primary competitive advantage for buyers with mixed-use needs — and it directly addresses the doorway clearance problem by allowing narrow-profile solo operation for indoor use.

Which 2-Person Scooter Is Made for Your Situation?

The 5 models on this page serve dramatically different buyer needs. Here's how to identify which category fits yours.

Couples where both riders have mobility challenges 🤝 Both riders need comfortable seating with proper orthopedic support; ideally both can reach the controls or have accessible armrests. → Afiscooter S3 Dual: Side-by-side orthopedic captain's seats with headrests, adjustable armrests, and the S3's signature adjustable tiller give both riders a comfortable, supported position. The 500-lb combined capacity accommodates most couples. Range of 31 miles is generous for all-day community outings. → Afiscooter SE Dual: The wide 40" orthopedic seat provides generous room; the SE's steel chassis is built for sustained daily use by two riders.

Caregiver accompanying a mobility-limited user 👨👩👧 The caregiver may not need mobility assistance themselves but wants to ride alongside rather than walking behind. → Cheeta Ninja Dual: The swivel seat design makes getting on and off easier for the mobility-limited rider while the caregiver can sit alongside naturally. The 200-lb scooter weight makes transporting to destinations practical with a hitch carrier. → Green Transporter Q Runner: The enclosed cabin means the caregiver and user ride together in true all-weather comfort. The backup camera adds safety for the operator navigating on behalf of both.

Active bariatric user wanting maximum seat width for one person 🏋️ A single larger-bodied rider who wants the widest, most comfortable seat available. → Afiscooter S4 with 33" dual upgrade: The full 33" seat used by a single rider provides extraordinary comfort and support. Single-rider operation on a 33" seat is a genuinely different comfort experience from a standard 18" seat — more hip room, better lateral support, wider armrest span.

Golf enthusiasts and outdoor recreational users Active riders who use the scooter on a golf course, in parks, or on varied outdoor terrain. → Green Transporter Cheeta Ninja Dual: Purpose-built for this use case. Its 6"-wide turf tires leave no tracks on golf course grass (a specific design goal), the swivel seat allows seated swinging, the optional golf bag rack carries clubs, and the ATV-style suspension handles course terrain at 14 mph. No other model comes close for golf use.

All-weather enclosed transportation 🌧️ Riders who live in variable climates and need protection from sun, rain, and wind. → Green Transporter Q Runner: The only fully enclosed model on this list. Roll-down side windows, a defroster, a sunroof, backup camera, multimedia player, and full lighting make this as close to a miniature electric car as any mobility scooter on the market. At 18 mph with 550 lbs capacity and 35 miles of range, it's genuinely capable for community transportation in all weather.

Match Your 2-Person Scooter to Your Terrain

The 5 featured models are engineered for dramatically different environments. Choosing based on terrain first narrows the field quickly.

Urban streets and sidewalksGreen Transporter Q Runner: is the standout for urban riding. Its enclosed cabin provides wind and sun protection on city streets; its full street kit (headlights, tail lights, turn signals, backup camera) matches the lighting requirements for visible street use; and its 18 mph capability is appropriate for multi-use lanes and slow urban streets. At 550 lbs combined capacity and 35-mile range, it's genuinely capable for urban community transportation.

Golf courses and turf Cheeta Ninja Dual: is purpose-built here. The 6"-wide turf tires are specifically engineered to distribute weight and leave no tracks on golf course grass — this is stated as a design goal in the product specifications. The optional golf bag rack replaces the rear baskets without tipping, and the swivel seat allows a proper seated swing. Nothing else on this list is designed for golf course use.

Park paths, outdoor community terrain, and natural surfaces Afiscooter S3 Dual: The 1,400W motors, 5" ground clearance, pneumatic tire + shock suspension systems, and 28–31 mile ranges make both Afikim models well-suited for the varied surfaces of outdoor parks — paved paths, light grass, gentle gravel, and moderate grades. The S3's 3-wheel design is more maneuverable on paths; the SE's steel chassis is the most durable for sustained outdoor daily use.

Community recreation centers, wide indoor public spacesAfiscooter S4 in convertible single-to-dual mode: In single-seat mode, the S4 navigates standard ADA-compliant doorways and hallways; switched to dual-seat mode, it accommodates a companion for outdoor portions of the outing. This convertibility makes it uniquely suited for environments where you transition between indoor (narrow corridors) and outdoor (open paths) use.

Getting Your 2-Person Scooter to the Destination

All 5 models on this list are full-size, heavy outdoor scooters. None can be transported in a standard car trunk. Transportation planning before purchase is essential.

What these scooters actually weigh:

  • Cheeta Ninja Dual: approximately 200 lbs — the most transport-friendly on the list by a significant margin

  • Afiscooter S3 Dual: 359 lbs — requires serious vehicle carrier capacity

  • Green Transporter Q Runner: enclosed cabin adds significant mass — not designed for regular carrier transport; this is a destination/community vehicle

  • Afiscooter S4: lighter than the S3 Dual; the 4-wheel platform makes it stable on carriers

The Cheeta Ninja transport advantage: At approximately 200 lbs, the Cheeta Ninja Dual is roughly half the weight of the Afiscooter S3 Dual. This makes it meaningfully more practical for regular transport to golf courses, parks, and outdoor destinations using a standard hitch-mounted carrier. For buyers who need to frequently transport their 2-person scooter, the Cheeta Ninja's lighter chassis is a real practical advantage.

Hitch-mounted carriers: the standard solution: For the Afiscooter S3 Dual (359 lbs) and other heavy models, a hitch-mounted platform carrier is the primary transport solution. Requirements:

  • Carrier weight rating: Must exceed the scooter's total weight — for the S3 at 359 lbs, a carrier rated for 400+ lbs with adequate safety margin

  • Class III hitch: Required for most heavy-duty scooter carriers (2" receiver); verify your vehicle's hitch class and tongue weight rating

  • Platform dimensions: Confirm the platform accommodates the scooter's footprint

  • The Cheeta Ninja's 200-lb weight is compatible with many standard hitch carriers rated for 300–400 lbs

Browse our car ramps and vehicle carrier collection for compatible options rated for your specific model.

Trailer transport for the heaviest models: For the heaviest configurations and for buyers who transport frequently, a small utility trailer with a ramp provides the most secure loading option. A trailer rated for 1,000 lbs handles any model on this list comfortably.

The Q Runner: The Green Transporter Q Runner is designed as a community vehicle, not a carrier-transport vehicle. Most Q Runner owners keep it at a primary outdoor location (community facility, resort, park) or garage it at home for neighborhood use. Car-based transport is impractical for this model.

  • Battery life and customer service concerns: A few users have reported occasional issues with battery longevity and responsiveness of customer service, which may affect overall satisfaction and maintenance experience.

  • Higher price point: Positioned below $5,000 for the single seat and around $5,395 for the dual-seat option, the Cheeta Ninja may be considered costly by some, especially when compared to simpler mobility scooters.

FAQs About Two Person Mobility Scooters

1. What is a two-person mobility scooter?

A two-person mobility scooter is a battery-powered mobility device with seating for two riders, typically in a side-by-side configuration where both riders face forward together. These scooters feature significantly larger frames, stronger motors (1,100–1,400W), higher combined weight capacities (500–550 lbs), wider seating systems (33"–49"), full suspension, and more powerful batteries than single-rider models. They're designed for couples, caregivers and users, or bariatric individuals who need extra seating width. All 5 models on this page are purpose-built outdoor vehicles rather than indoor mobility aids.

2. Who can benefit from a two-person mobility scooter?

Two-person scooters serve several distinct buyer profiles: couples where both partners have mobility challenges who want to travel together; caregivers who want to accompany a mobility-limited user without walking behind them; bariatric users who want a wider, more comfortable single seat; golf enthusiasts who want to bring a playing partner; and families who want to take a grandchild or companion on community outings. See our full buyer profiles guide above for specific model recommendations by use case.

3. How much weight can a two-person mobility scooter support?

The featured models support between 500 and 550 lbs combined. The Afiscooter S4, SE, S3 Dual, and Cheeta Ninja Dual all support 500 lbs total — meaning the combined weight of both riders must not exceed 500 lbs. The Green Transporter Q Runner leads at 550 lbs. For heavier combined weights, call 800-682-9444 to discuss options — and always apply the 30-lb buffer rule (choose a scooter rated at least 30 lbs above your combined rider weight).

4. Are two-person mobility scooters safe?

Yes — all featured models are designed with the structural engineering required for their weight ratings. All include robust suspension systems (the Cheeta Ninja's ATV-style independent shocks, the Afiscooter models' pneumatic tire suspension), braking systems calibrated for two-rider weight, and safety features like seat belts (Cheeta Ninja's street kit includes a seat belt), LED full lighting packages, and anti-tip designs. As with any outdoor scooter, follow the terrain and speed guidelines: reduce speed on unfamiliar surfaces, approach slopes straight-on, and don't exceed the posted speed for your environment.

5. Can a two-person mobility scooter be used indoors?

These 5 models are specifically designed for outdoor use. Their total frame widths (37" for the narrowest — the Afiscooter S3 Dual) exceed standard 32" residential interior doorways. They are appropriate for wide indoor commercial spaces (convention centers, large accessible facilities) but not for typical home use through standard doorways. The Afiscooter S4 is the most flexible option: its standard single-seat configuration fits standard doorways; its dual-seat upgrade is available for outdoor shared use.

6. How wide is a 2-person mobility scooter?

This is the most important practical question buyers ask — and the answer varies significantly. The Afiscooter S3 Dual's total frame width is 37 inches — the narrowest on this list. The Afiscooter SE's side-by-side 40" seat puts total frame width at approximately 45"+ (confirm with our team). The Cheeta Ninja Dual's 49" seat puts total frame width at approximately 55"–65". The Q Runner's enclosed cabin makes width measurement complex. Critical note: always compare the scooter's total frame width (including armrests and frame components) to your doorway's clear opening — not just the seat width listed in specs.

7. Will a 2-person mobility scooter fit through a standard doorway?

Not through a typical 32" residential doorway. The narrowest model on this list — the Afiscooter S3 Dual at 37" total frame width — requires a minimum 37" clear doorway opening, which is wider than most residential interior doors. ADA-compliant accessible doorways (36" minimum clear) are borderline for the S3 Dual only. For buyers with standard doorways: the Afiscooter S4 in single-seat configuration fits standard doorways and can be configured as dual-seat for outdoor use. Call 800-682-9444 — our team helps buyers navigate width requirements and can discuss custom seating configurations.

8. Does Medicare cover 2-person mobility scooters?

Medicare Part B covers power-operated vehicles (mobility scooters) when prescribed by a physician and deemed medically necessary for use in the home. However, 2-person mobility scooters are typically classified as recreational/outdoor vehicles rather than in-home medical necessity DME — Medicare coverage for the featured models is unlikely under standard Medicare DME criteria. If you have a bariatric medical need that one of these scooters addresses, speak with your physician about documentation. For most buyers, these scooters are purchased out-of-pocket, financed, or covered by alternative insurance.

9. How much does a 2-person mobility scooter cost?

Two-person mobility scooters range from approximately $3,500 to $8,000+ depending on the model. The Afiscooter S4 (convertible single/dual) sits in the $3,500–$4,500 range; the Afiscooter S3 Dual and SE Dual are in the $4,000–$6,000 range; the Green Transporter Q Runner (enclosed, multimedia, backup camera) and Cheeta Ninja Dual (ATV terrain capability, golf rack) represent the premium tier. 10. What is the difference between side-by-side and tandem seating?

Side-by-side seating (all 5 featured models) places both riders next to each other, facing forward together. This creates a wider total footprint but allows natural side-by-side conversation and equal access to the riding experience. Tandem seating (front/rear) places one rider behind the other — narrower width but less social. All 5 models on this page use side-by-side seating. For tandem options, call 800-682-9444 to discuss availability in the broader catalog.

11. Are 2-person mobility scooters street legal?

The ADA classifies mobility scooters as mobility devices, not motor vehicles — meaning they don't require registration or a driver's license in most US jurisdictions. However, the Q Runner (18 mph) and Cheeta Ninja Dual (14 mph) operate at speeds where local regulations about road use vary. The Q Runner's street kit (headlights, turn signals, mirrors) is designed for street-adjacent use. Local regulations vary significantly — check your specific state and municipal rules before riding on public roads. All models are appropriate for sidewalks, parks, and multi-use paths at appropriate speeds.

12. How fast does a 2-person mobility scooter go?

Top speeds vary significantly across this list. The Q Runner leads at 18 mph, followed by the Cheeta Ninja Dual at 14 mph, the Afiscooter S4 and S3 at 11 mph, and the Afiscooter SE at 9 mph. For context: a brisk walking pace is 3–4 mph; most multi-use paths have informal 15 mph speed limits. At two riders, operate at conservative speeds on unfamiliar terrain — the combined weight affects both handling and braking distances.

13. Can one person ride a 2-person mobility scooter alone?

Yes — all featured models can be operated by a single rider. The Afiscooter S4 is specifically designed for this, with a standard single-seat configuration and an optional dual-seat upgrade. The Afiscooter S3 and SE can be operated solo with the dual seat occupied by only one rider. The Cheeta Ninja and Q Runner are also functional with one rider. For the bariatric use case, many single riders specifically choose a 2-person scooter to use the full wide seat for themselves — the Afiscooter S4's 33" dual-seat upgrade used by a single rider is a popular choice for this reason.

I’m interested in your Breeze model with a seat wide enough for two people. But your 33" side seat is the same width as the opening in the door to my apartment. What is the maximum width of your machine with the 33" seat? We need a seat 28" wide — can the 24" seat be expanded? Or can a special 28" (or 30") seat be made? At what cost.
