Pride Jazzy Carbon 27 vs. Jazzy Carbon 27X: Which Lightweight Folding Power Chair Is Right for You?

Oct 7, 2026by Bjorn Orvar

Pride Mobility keeps making folding power wheelchairs lighter. The original Jazzy Carbon weighed about 39 lbs without its battery. The Jazzy Ultralite brought that down to about 33 lbs. Now Pride's two newest carbon fiber chairs, the Jazzy Carbon 27 and the Jazzy Carbon 27X, weigh roughly 27 lbs each with the battery removed.

With such similar names and weights, it's easy to assume they're nearly the same chair. They aren't. They fold in completely different ways, and they differ in weight capacity, power, suspension, seat size, joystick and storage. Kellon from our Electric Wheelchairs USA team compared them side by side and reviewed each one in detail. This guide brings together everything he found to help you choose.

The Quick Answer

  • Choose the Jazzy Carbon 27 if you want the easiest fold, a higher 300 lb weight capacity, more motor power, front suspension, under-seat storage, and a smart digital joystick with a speedometer, headlight and USB-C port.

  • Choose the Jazzy Carbon 27X if you want the narrowest possible folded size for tight storage spaces, the option to add a second battery and double your range, a larger 18" seat, bigger rear wheels, and a thicker standard cushion. It's also the better fit for taller riders, as long as you're under its 275 lb capacity.

What's the Difference in the Names?

The "X" in Carbon 27X refers to the way the chair folds. Look at the frame and you'll see an X-shaped cross brace. Like a traditional manual wheelchair, the 27X folds sideways, collapsing inward from both sides into a narrow bundle.

The Jazzy Carbon 27 folds the way most folding power chairs do: front to back, into a flatter package. Both names include "27" because both chairs weigh about 27 lbs without the battery.

Meet the Two Chairs

Jazzy Carbon 27: More Power, More Features

The Jazzy Carbon 27 supports up to 300 lbs and travels up to 9.3 miles per charge. Its two 250-watt motors are the same motors used on the larger Jazzy Carbon HD, giving it 500 watts of combined power, which is impressive for a chair this light.

It's also the more feature-rich of the two, with a digital joystick, built-in headlight, USB-C charging port, front coil-spring suspension, a zippered storage pouch under the seat, and a breathable mesh backrest. It comes in two colors: Black Cherry and Night Sky.

Jazzy Carbon 27X: Ultra-Compact With Expandable Range

The Jazzy Carbon 27X supports up to 275 lbs and travels up to 8 miles on its standard battery. Its standout feature is a second battery slot. Add an optional second battery and you can double your range to about 16 miles.

Thanks to its sideways fold, the 27X folds down to about 10 to 12 inches wide, making it one of the most compact folding power chairs you can buy. It also has a slightly larger seat, a thicker memory foam cushion, bigger rear wheels and more ground clearance. Kellon noted that, as far as he knows, it's the first sideways-folding power chair Pride has made.

Head-to-Head Comparison

Folding and Storage Size

This is the biggest difference between the two chairs, and it involves a real trade-off between ease and compactness.

The Carbon 27 is easier to fold. Flip up the footplate, pull the latch on the back, and it folds. Folded, it stands upright on small rear legs, which Kellon prefers because it's less likely to scratch the frame. It can also lie flat. Unfolding is just as quick: grab it from the back and pull.

The Carbon 27X takes a few more steps:

  • Fold the seat back down using the buttons on the back

  • Flip up and tuck away both footplates

  • Remove the cushion

  • Optionally remove the battery and joystick

  • Pull up from the middle of the seat to fold it inward

The reward for those extra steps is a very narrow fold. Kellon measured the folded 27X at about 9.5 to 10 inches wide at the rear wheels. It also has a locking mechanism that keeps it from unfolding when you lift it into a car.

As Kellon summed it up: if you need something that won't take up much space, the 27X is a great choice, but folding and unfolding the Carbon 27 is much easier.

Weight Capacity

The Carbon 27 supports up to 300 lbs, while the Carbon 27X supports up to 275 lbs. If you're close to or above 275 lbs, the Carbon 27 is the right choice. If you need even more capacity in a carbon fiber folding chair, ask our team about the Jazzy Carbon HD, which supports up to 400 lbs.

Battery and Range

The Carbon 27 offers the longer range on a single battery: up to 9.3 miles, compared with up to 8 miles on the 27X. You can buy a spare battery for either chair, but the Carbon 27 has no dedicated place on the chair to carry it.

The 27X is designed for a second battery. The cup holder compartment on one side can be swapped for an additional battery, which clicks onto the same metal connector. A switch on the battery lets you choose which one to draw power from. When the first battery runs low, flip the switch and keep going, for a total range of up to about 16 miles.

Kellon shared one useful tip: when you charge the 27X through the joystick, it only charges the battery that's currently selected. To charge both, switch to the second battery once the first is full, or charge each battery separately off the chair.

Both chairs let you remove the battery and charge it indoors. That's handy if you'd rather leave the chair in your car or garage. The charger light turns green when the battery is full.

Motor Power and Performance

The Carbon 27 has two 250-watt motors (500 watts total), while the 27X has two 150-watt motors (300 watts total). Both have the same 3.7 mph top speed, but the Carbon 27's extra power can help on ramps and slopes and with heavier riders.

On the other hand, the 27X has larger 10-inch rear wheels and about 3 inches of ground clearance, compared with 8.27-inch rear wheels and about 1 inch of clearance at the motor on the Carbon 27. In his individual review, Kellon noted that the Carbon 27 can ride on grass, but its smaller wheels don't perform as well there as larger-wheeled chairs.

Both chairs turn within nearly their own footprint and stop on a dime, which makes them excellent for use at home and in stores. Both have electromagnetic brakes that engage automatically when you let go of the joystick.

Suspension and Ride Comfort

The Carbon 27 has coil-spring suspension on its front wheels. As Kellon put it, you won't feel bumps as much, and it's definitely better than not having it. In the comparison video, Kellon checked the 27X and found no suspension on the front or rear wheels. Neither chair has rear suspension.

Seat, Cushion, and Backrest

Carbon 27: The seat is 17" x 17", and the armrests are up to 19 inches apart, so there's more room than the seat size suggests. The standard cushion is 2 to 3 inches thick and attaches with Velcro to a flat pan seat. The breathable mesh backrest contours to your back, which is a real plus in hot weather.

Carbon 27X: The seat is 18 inches wide with about 17.5 inches between the armrests and a generous seat depth of about 19.5 inches. The seat is a little over 21 inches off the ground. The standard memory foam cushion is noticeably thicker, and Kellon found it more comfortable. The backrest firmness can be adjusted using straps behind the rear pouch.

Cushion upgrade: For either chair, you can upgrade to a Stealth Simplicity cushion for an additional $122. It adds roughly 1.5 to 2 inches of thickness, and it's a popular upgrade, especially for the Carbon 27.

Joystick and Controls

This is a big difference. The Carbon 27 has a smart digital joystick with:

  • A speedometer in mph and an odometer

  • Five speed "gears," from a very slow crawl up to 3.7 mph

  • A battery gauge and horn

  • A built-in headlight

  • A USB-C port for charging your phone

  • On-screen diagnostics. If a freewheel lever is left in the wrong position, the display tells you exactly which side is the problem, such as "right brake malfunction."

The Carbon 27X has a simpler joystick with a power button, speed dial, battery gauge and horn.

Both joysticks disconnect and lift off quickly, which Kellon recommends doing whenever you travel so it doesn't get damaged. Both can also be moved to the left side if you're left-handed, simply by swapping the joystick and cup holder.

Armrests and Transfers

Both chairs have flip-up armrests that release with a button. On the Carbon 27, the flipped-up armrest bar still sticks out about 4 inches from the seat back, which can get slightly in the way during side transfers. The 27X's armrests flip back further, leaving less of an obstruction.

Both are sturdy. Kellon put his full weight on the armrests of both chairs with no issues.

Footplates

The Carbon 27 has a single flip-up carbon fiber footplate with a textured, grippy surface that resists scratches. The 27X has two individual flip-up footplates that adjust in height with an Allen wrench.

Storage

Many folding power chairs have almost no storage, so the Carbon 27 stands out with a decent-sized zippered pouch under the seat. The 27X can't have under-seat storage because of how it folds, but it does include a small pouch on the back (large enough for the charger) and a small compartment with a cup holder that can hold items like a wallet or keys. Remember that if you add the second battery, it takes the place of that compartment.

Size When Unfolded

The Carbon 27 is the shorter chair at about 35 inches long. Kellon measured about 34 inches with the footplate down. The 27X is about 41 inches long, though Kellon measured closer to 37 inches with the footrests down. Both are about 23 inches wide. A shorter chair is a little easier to maneuver in small rooms, elevators and bathrooms.

Fit for Taller Riders

Kellon is 6'4" and weighs 235 lbs, and he sat in both chairs. He felt the Carbon 27 was fine for its purpose as a lightweight travel chair, but he found the 27X more comfortable at his height, thanks to its larger seat, deeper seat depth and adjustable footplates. If you're a taller rider under 275 lbs, the 27X is likely the better fit.

Features Both Chairs Share

  • Lightweight carbon fiber frame weighing about 27 lbs without the battery

  • 3.7 mph top speed

  • Airline-compliant lithium battery that removes in seconds

  • Charging on the chair or off the chair

  • Flat-free tires front and rear

  • Flip-up armrests, a seat belt and a cup holder

  • Rear anti-tip wheels

  • Freewheel levers and push handles, so a caregiver can push the chair or you can use it like a walker to stretch your legs

  • Quick-release joystick that can be mounted on either side

  • 5-year frame warranty

Traveling and Flying With Your Chair

Both chairs are built for travel. Their lithium batteries are airline-compliant, and both batteries and joysticks remove in seconds, which airlines typically require. A few tips:

  • Contact your airline in advance. Policies for mobility devices and lithium batteries vary, so confirm the requirements before your trip.

  • Remove the joystick and battery before handing the chair over, and keep the battery with you as instructed by the airline.

  • Protect the finish. Carbon fiber is strong, but its glossy finish can scratch. Kellon's own demo chair picked up a scratch when a sharp object rubbed against it in his vehicle, so avoid stacking hard items against the frame.

  • Use the 27X's lock. Lock the folded 27X before lifting it so it can't open unexpectedly.

Which One Should You Choose?

Care Tips for Your Carbon Fiber Chair

  • Charge regularly. Charge after each day of use and avoid letting the battery fully drain.

  • Store the battery properly. Keep it in a dry place with moderate temperatures.

  • Protect the frame. Keep sharp or heavy objects away from the carbon fiber when transporting it. Folding the Carbon 27 upright on its rear legs helps prevent scratches.

  • Keep the connectors clean. Check that the battery's metal connectors stay free of dirt and debris.

  • Check the wheels. Flat-free tires never need air, but clear away hair and debris from the wheels and casters.

Delivery and Setup

Both chairs ship with free standard delivery, usually within 1 to 3 business days, with delivery 3 to 10 business days after shipment. White glove service with inside delivery and setup is available for an additional $250.

When your chair arrives, inspect the packaging before signing. If you see damage, note it on the delivery receipt. If you find damage after unboxing, contact us within 48 hours with photos and we'll handle the claim with the manufacturer for you.

Warranty and Free In-Home Service

Pride backs both chairs with a 5-year frame warranty and a 1-year limited warranty on the drivetrain, electronics and battery. Kellon describes Pride's support as world class.

When you purchase either chair from Electric Wheelchairs USA, you also receive a free one-year in-home service contract. If something goes wrong in your first year, we'll start with troubleshooting over the phone. If that doesn't resolve it, we'll send a technician to your home.
